Speaking to Inside Soap magazine, he said: “I’ve just watched the rough cut of our Christmas episode, and I was bawling!

“What I really love about Hollyoaks at the moment is that it’s so full of love – although we have three absolutely massive bombshells that blow up on Christmas Day which have profound consequences for all the characters involved.

“It’s funny, devastating and it definitely makes you gasp.”

Bryan refused to be drawn into revealing exactly what these huge developments will involve, but he did hint at some “big, exciting” returns set for the 25th anniversary in 2020, including John Paul McQueen (James Sutton).

However, the show’s chief admitted Craig Dean won’t be reprising his role as Guy Burnet, meaning John Paul will be making a comeback as a single man.

Bryan’s comments come after Gregory Finnegan has hinted his alter ego James Nightingale will have a “pretty dark” Christmas on the soap.

The 39-year-old actor suggested his character will be struggling over the festive season.

He recently said: “Romeo and Juliet are really looking forward to a proper family Christmas but it’s not gonna go quite to plan.

“Certainly for James, he gets embroiled in some pretty dark goings on and makes a bit of an exit.

“It’s not gonna be the family Christmas they’re hoping for but it never is – hopefully there’s some cheer on the way.”
