Emmerdale’s Matthew Wolfenden reveals abuse storyline to get very dark as David discovers the truth

Viewers have been fed up with David missing the signs

As Emmerdale‘s David Metcalfe remains oblivious to his girlfriend Maya’s Stepney’s abuse of his stepson Jacob Gallagher, fans are getting annoyed.

But actor Matthew Wolfenden has now revealed his character will find out the truth – and the scenes are set to get even darker when he does.

Speaking in this week’s edition of OK! Magazine, Matthew said: “At the moment for me it’s not too difficult as David doesn’t have a clue that it’s going on behind his back.

“He’s naive to it and he thinks his relationship is going really well, but I’ve just read some scripts of when things take a turn for the worst and that will all be quite emotional.

“That’s when it’s going to be difficult for me.

“The storyline’s set to get darker which will be hard to play, particularly because I’m a dad.”

Maya has been grooming Jacob for months and they finally slept together just after his 16th birthday.

Jacob thinks he’s in love, which already makes the storyline pretty dark.

Last week Maya forced Jacob into having sex when he wasn’t in the mood, leaving viewers even more upset.

They are desperate for the storyline, which has been very uncomfortable viewing, to be wrapped up.

Show boss Kate Brookes has insisted that it will have the correct ending.

Asked about the outcome of the storyline being true to life, Kate said: “We’ve got a responsibility.

“A lot of people watch the show, a lot of teenagers watch the show, and also we would never just tell one of these stories lightly, we have a duty to make sure the right protocol is carried out, and the right outcome.”

This week sees David leave the village without Jacob – leaving Maya completely free to continue grooming the teen.

Matthew has previously hit out at critics of the storyline. He told new! magazine: “There’s been a lot of positive response, but there’s been a lot of negative too. But the negative says what we’re doing, we’re doing well.

“People are saying: ‘It’s horrible, I can’t watch!’ That’s exactly my point – it’s supposed to be uncomfortable and this happens in real life!”

Emmerdale continues Tuesday to Thursday at 7pm, with a double bill on Tuesday on ITV.
