Sammy joined the Emmerdale cast in 2001 and played the role of Katie until the character was killed off in 2015.

During an appearance on ITV’s Loose Women shortly after her departure from the soap, she was asked how she felt about the fact that there’s no going back to the village.

She told the panellists: “I said [to the producers] I want to go about a year before I left, and it’s obviously up to [them] whether I die or not.

“A few months later the producers said, ‘Right, we are going to kill you off’. It was quite nerve racking but okay, let’s go for it.

“And do you know what? It’s the best thing ever because otherwise, I’d be looking over my shoulder all of the time thinking, ‘What if?’ And now, I don’t have that. I’ve got to move forward.”

Asked if there were any other times during her long stint on Emmerdale that she thought she needed to go, she replied: “From time to time, but it’s been perfect for me.

“I’ve got my daughter Mia, who’s 10 now, and over that time I’ve been at home, so I’ve been bringing her up and working at the same time. So it’s been the perfect job for me.”

Earlier this month, Sammy was among the Emmerdale stars, current and former, to throw their support behind actor Mark Jordan after he was cleared of assault.
