Emmerdale: Who is Annie Sugden?

Fans of Emmerdale will know Annie was one of the soap’s original characters, who appeared in the very first episode of Emmerdale Farm in 1972.

She is the mother of Joe and Jack Sugden and appeared on the show on and off from 1972 until 2009.

During her time in the programme she had numerous storylines including being widowed twice and coping with the deaths of family members.

She also sustained injuries during the famous plane crash, which left her in a coma for three months.

After the plane crash, the village changed its name from Beckindale to Emmerdale to honour the Sugden family and so it wouldn’t be remembered as the village where the plane crashed.

Annie went to go live in Spain and eventually got married to Amos.

She briefly returned in 1995 and 1996. But her final appearance was in 2009, when she returned for Jack’s funeral.

Although she hasn’t been back to the village since, she has been mentioned several times.

Last year, her grandchildren Robert and Victoria paid her a visit after Victoria had been raped.

Annie Sugden actress Sheila Mercier

In real-life Annie actress Sheila Mercier died last year in December at the age of 100.

She passed away peacefully in her sleep. After the news broke, her Emmerdale co-stars paid tribute to the soap star.
