There’s tragedy heading for Emmerdale’s Bernice Blackstock as her panic about her impending birthday leaves her fighting for her life.
In the run up to her birthday, Bernice has been struggling with the fact she is about to turn another year older. But matters have been made even worse because this year just so happens to be a big birthday as she turns 50.
It also doesn’t help that she is dating hunky doctor Liam… who might make her feel young again, but his daughter Leanna definitely doesn’t help with her constant jibes.
Feeling fragile about her age as her birthday approaches, Bernice is interested when Kerry chats about botox.
But it’s only later when Bernice is alone that she seriously considers giving the injections a go, and ends up secretly buying some online.
Desperate to defy time, Bernice heads out to do some exercise the next morning, but instead of coming back feeling refreshed and full of energy, she is just more mortified than ever when Diane and Gabby spot her and laugh.
Felling more down than ever, and feeling like she is growing older by the minute, Bernice bites the bullet and asks Kerry to inject the botox for her… what could possibly go wrong?
Well, quite a lot, apparently.
Just moments after Kerry has done the first injection, Bernice starts to have an allergic reaction and panic sets in when it soon becomes clear she is struggling to breathe.
Bernice is rushed to hospital where a doctor explains to Kerry and Leanna that Bernice has had severe allergic reaction and could be permanently paralysed.
Liam is fuming that Kerry’s suggestion to try botox has left Bernice fighting for her life, and as she is rushed to intensive care, things don’t look good for the beautician.
As Bernice lies helpless in her hospital bed, Gabby is horrified when she discovers from Kerry that it was troublemaking teen Leanna who persuaded her mum to go through with the injections after making Bernice feel more insecure than ever before.
Gabby has to be held back by Diane as Leanna struggles to justify her actions, leaving the girls at war and everyone wondering if Bernice will ever recover from her botox ordeal.
Emmerdale airs weeknights at 7pm on ITV, with an extra episode at 8pm on Thursdays.
