EastEnders star Rita Simons still furious over being axed

The actress played the role for a decade before being unceremoniously killed off

Former EastEnders actress Rita Simons has revealed she still hasn’t ‘made peace’ with being axed from the soap.

The actress played Roxy Mitchell in the BBC show for a decade from 2007.

She was killed off alongside her on-screen sister Ronnie, actress Samantha Womack, 18 months ago.

The sisters drowned in horror scenes on New Year’s Day after Ronnie’s wedding to Jack Branning.

The decision was widely criticised by fans and the stars of the show at the time.

And now Rita has revealed she is still annoyed by the decision.

She told the Daily Star Sunday: “I wish they hadn’t killed us off.

“I don’t feel bitter but I haven’t quite made peace with the fact we are dead.

“Both Sam and I were gutted. That decision was made by one person and we had no choice in the matter.”

Actress Samantha Womack, who played Ronnie, recently told OK! magazine about her own annoyance at being killed off.

She said: “I hate the idea that I can’t go back – unless I come back as some weird Australian twin sister.

“I understand they have to regenerate and constantly recast, but my complaint was when you have two characters who are embedded within the fabric of that community, by killing them completely you’re removing them from any future producer.

“It’s short-sighted.”

Even legendary EastEnders actress Dame Barbara Windsor called the decision “a mistake”.
