Lucy Benjamin open to EastEnders return for the right storyline

She was last seen on screen in 2017

Lucy Benjamin would “absolutely consider” returning to EastEnders if her storyline was right.

The 48-year-old actress reprised her role as Lisa Fowler on the BBC One soap in 2017 for a brief two-week stint, and she has set her sights on gracing Albert Square with her presence once more, partly because she would love to share the screen with her pal Tamzin Outhwaite (Mel Owen) again.

She said: “It’s lovely with Lisa because I can pick her up and leave her alone – I know that character inside out. It’s always a delight to go back and play her I have to say.

“So yeah I would consider everything that gets thrown my way. If the timing was right and the story was good – I loved working with Tam, we had a great time and their relationship was quite iconic so I would absolutely consider it, yeah.”

While Lucy is keen to head back to Walford, she hasn’t had chance to tune into the goings-on in the Square of late, but has heard her friend Tamzin is doing a “grand job”.

She added to Metro.co.uk: “I’m proud of Tamzin – I haven’t seen it of late because I’ve not been home with being back to back in plays in time to watch EastEnders.

“I keep up with things like reading press and reviews and I know that she is doing a grand job.”

Lisa played a huge part in one of the soap’s biggest storylines, dubbed ‘Who Shot Phil’, in 2001 when she was revealed to be the culprit of gunning down her husband Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden).

More than 22 million viewers tuned in to see the character’s dramatic confession to the attempted murder.

Lucy joined the show in 1998 but her character – whose daughter is Louise Mitchell (Tilly Keeper) – departed Albert Square in 2003 only to return in 2010 and again two years ago, when the actress loved reuniting with Steve, Letitia Dean (Sharon Mitchell) and Natalie Cassidy (Sonia Fowler).

She said at the time: “It was like the first day in a new job but within 10 minutes it was like I’d never been away.

“It was lovely working with Steve, Tish [Letitia] and Natalie Cassidy again. They have my back.”
