EastEnders boss teases huge Christmas and 35th anniversary episodes

Kate Oates has big plans

Kate Oates has teased some “huge” plans for EastEnders this Christmas and for next year’s 35th anniversary in February.

The soap’s head honcho revealed she and executive producer Jon Sen have some dramatic ideas in the pipeline.

She coyly said viewers should keep an eye on the Mitchells, the Carters and Whitney Dean (Shona McGarty) amongst others.

She told Metro.co.uk: “There’s so much going on in Walford from autumn, well into the New Year.

“But, of course, in true EastEnders tradition, Christmas is huge.

“Much of it will circulate around a very complicated and messy love affair – so expect some major Sheanu drama as it all explodes – but we’ve got some twists and surprises in that story which last right through to New Year.

“And then we move into the 35th anniversary in February!

“I can’t say much at all about it now – except we have a big Carter story at the forefront, and some great drama with Whitney too – so it is going to be a very exciting time for the show.”

Kate insisted the exciting run has well and truly kicked off with the wedding week as Whitney jilted Callum Highway (Tony Clay) at the altar, while there was also comebacks for Bianca Jackson (Patsy Palmer) and Lisa Fowler (Lucy Benjamin).

Adding how it’s only the beginning, she said: “Between our huge September kick-off with the wedding week, right through to the anniversary beyond, there is no let up.

“I hope everyone will be as excited as Jon and I are!”

Meanwhile, the producer recently revealed her aim of wanting a same-sex kiss in a “mainstream soap” to receive “zero complaints”.

She previously said: “I’m looking forward to the day when a same-sex kiss can be shown on a mainstream soap and the duty log receives zero complaints – because then we’ll be in a much better place as a society.”
