According to the Mirror the comedian said: “There is an extraordinary history on Coronation Street of young women being killed.

“It’s slightly out of control and needs monitoring.”

She went on to say: “If it’s lesbians, it’s death. Something will always happen. It’s just the way it is.”

In fact, the soap has killed off just two of its lesbian characters.

In 2014, Sophie Webster’s girlfriend, Maddie Heath, died in an explosion at the builder’s yard.

She was on her way to tell Sophie that Jenny Bradley was about to kidnap Sophie’s little brother Jack, but sadly never got the chance as she was killed by the blast.

Then earlier this year, Kate Connor and Rana Habeeb were pulled apart by Rana’s untimely death.

The nurse died when the factory roof collapsed after Gary Windass sabotaged it in order to secure more work.

It was Kate and Rana’s wedding day and the pair managed to say their vows to each other before Rana passed away.

Fans at the time were outraged and complained to Ofcom that the soap had led them to believe they’d see the same sex wedding actually go ahead.

However, Ofcom cleared Corrie and decided not to investigate after receiving 236 complaints.

Actress Bhavna Limbachia confirmed it was her decision for Rana to be killed off as she felt it was the only way she and Kate would ever be separated.

Writer Russell T Davies, who joined Sue on the panel, said soaps were “fantastic engines” for driving forward LGBT+ storylines and cited Antony Cotton joining the Street in a response to Channel 4 series Queer as Folk, which Russell wrote.
