Louis Emerick played taxi driver Mick Johnson for over ten years in Brookie which was cancelled in 2003.

Now he’s joining Coronation Street and it’s fair to say he’s got a pretty good role.

Louis will be playing Mike, who we will learn is a former teacher of Steve McDonald.

Not only that, but Mike takes quite a liking to his old pupil’s mum, Liz, played by Beverley Callard, and the pair embark on a brand new romance.

This isn’t going to be fun for Steve though, and The Mirror reports a show source as saying it’ll cause the hapless character plenty of discomfort.

“Louis’ character Mike is not someone Steve is pleased to see again after years apart, and it gets worse when he develops a crush on Liz,” the source says.

“The idea of one of his old teachers trying to date his mum is awful for him but it leads to some amusing scenes on the cobbles.”

The source also suggests that Louis is ready and raring to go for his new role on Corrie.

“Louis is very excited about playing the role. He will be on set from next week and can’t wait to get started,” says the source.

Louis himself confirmed that excitement in a Tweet, proudly announcing to fans that he would be joining the show.

“Evening all, well as you know now,I’m heading for,The most famous street in the world,” he wrote.

“To say I’m chuffed,is the biggest understatement EVER!I wanna thank All of U on here for your support+belief! How many of U have sed”you’d be fab in it,a man for Liz”

Mick left Brookside in 2001 and has recently starred in Zapped on Dave alongside The Inbetweeners star James Buckley.

He also appeared in Eric, Ernie and Me with Steven Tompkinson which aired on BBC4 over Christmas. He even played Santa in Elf: The Musical at Manchester’s Lowry Theatre.

Louis will begin shooting his first Coronation Street scenes next week as Mike is reunited with Steve and introduced to viewers for the first time.

We can’t wait to see Steve’s reaction to his old teacher and his mum’s new man!
