Coronation Street’s Sam Robertson reveals why he nearly quit the ITV soap

Thank the soap gods that he didn't!

Coronation Street wouldn’t be the same without the chiselled jaw and sexy Scottish accent of solicitor Adam Barlow.

So it will probably come as a great relief to soap fans that the actor Sam Robertson, who plays Sarah Platt‘s love interest, chose NOT to leave the ITV soap this year.

The actor, 33, has revealed that he took time out from filming in 2019 partly to decide whether he wanted a permanent break from the cobbles.

But, thankfully, he decided to return and his character has since started what looks like a promising romance with Sarah.

Whether he survives that long after making an enemy of murderer Gary Windass, though, is another matter!

Talking to What’s On TV, Celebrity Big Brother star Sam admits he came very close to quitting the soap after the ‘job took over his life’.

He says that an extended break from the show at the start of the year gave him the opportunity to work out whether a future on the cobbles was what he really wanted.

He said: “I was in a strange head space before my break. This job overtakes your life. You can’t leave it at the door on a Friday night, and that was getting to me.

“I wasn’t enjoying that aspect, or the intrusion. I needed the head space to decide if I wanted that long term.”

Sam first arrived in Weatherfield as Adam Barlow in 2004, but left in 2007.

He then returned in 2016, but was temporarily written out earlier this year when his character went travelling for 10 weeks.

In reality, Dundee-born Sam had been granted leave to take a holiday in Sydney, Australia, where his best friend was getting married.

He even told the magazine he has dreamt of moving to Australia one day to escape “the intrusion” of being a soap star.

He credited co-star Mikey North, who plays Gary, with helping him to deal with the attention that being famous brings.

He said: “Mikey deals with it really well. He’s so cool with everyone.

“I’m more temperamental. If I’m in a good mood, I’ve got all the time in the world, but if I’m in a bad mood, then I don’t want to speak to anyone.

“I’m never going to have a night out without someone coming to ask for a selfie. But I’ve learnt to accept it.”

ED! told you earlier this month that Sam Robertson is set to sign a new Coronation Street deal.

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 7.30pm and 8.30pm on ITV.
