Lucy Fallon has revealed why Bethany Platt will become a lap dancer in Coronation Street.
Viewers watched for months as the soap played out the harrowing storyline in worrying detail.
Bethany was first targeted by Nathan Curtis when he found her in a vulnerable state having taken an overdose of diet pills.
He slowly groomed her and coerced her into having sex with one of his friends before eventually putting her through a horrendous gang rape ordeal and trying to sell her abroad.
After bravely breaking free of Nathan's control, Bethany faced him in court where he and the others in the gang were found guilty of rape and sent to prison.
Bethany will soon decide to become a lap dancer in order to take back control of her life with Lucy saying: “It’s the way she is dealing with it, it’s going to be a really long road to recovery. I just hope she finds some kind of happiness.”
The actress also revealed she was left devastated as she talked to real-life abuse victims.
The heartbreaking story of one girl who had been groomed in the same way as Bethany left her sobbing.
Lucy told the Mirror: “The NSPCC introduced me to Lucie a victim of sexual exploitation and abuse, and I was crying the whole way through our chat.
“You know these things happen and they’re horrible but when somebody’s sitting in front of you telling you they were abused when they were ten it’s heartbreaking."
