They share a shock kiss while Sinead lies dying, but Coronation Street boss Iain MacLeod has revealed Daniel Osbourne and Bethany Platt's complicated relationship will play out into next year.
With Bethany's feelings for Daniel intensifying by the day, she's struggling to hide them.
But Daniel is all-consumed with his dying wife, whose battle with cervical cancer is set to come to an end next week.
As he and Sinead row over him wanting her to rest when they're celebrating their family Christmas early, Sinead sends Daniel away.
He leaves and heads into the ginnel where Bethany offers comfort - and he kisses her.
Ken Barlow sees them and orders Daniel back to his wife.
But even though Daniel confesses and Sinead forgives him eventually, the repercussions will go on long after Sinead's death.
Rob Mallard, who plays Daniel, said at a recent press event: "He'll have to untangle all those emotions, because he and Bethany share a guilt.
"There's a Sinead attachment to that, there'll be something he wants, but he's not sure what it is he wants from her – I'm not sure whether he needs to forgive her or he wants Bethany to forgive him as well, there's something there and you'll probably see transference as well."
Show boss Iain MacLeod expanded: "This storyline has legs, it's emotionally complex.
This storyline has legs, it's emotionally complex.
"Bethany certianly thinks she's in love with Daniel, but as Audrey says to her, to what degree does she love Daniel and to what degree does she love the Byronic windswept Daniel that's crying on a moor because he's lost the love of his life?
"Does she love the real Daniel, does she know the real Daniel?
"For Daniel's part it's a story about loneliness and isolation and it's about the Barlow family not knowing what degree they should take over and what degree they should back off.
"They all return to their lives and Daniel thinks my wife's still dead where have you all gone."
With Bethany actress Lucy Fallon departing next year, it seems it's not likely to be a happy ending for them whatever happens.
Daniel and Sinead have been left devastated by the news she only has weeks to live.
She was originally diagnosed with cancer last year, but delayed treatment in order to safely deliver her son, Bertie.
Although in July it looked like things were stable, she discovered last month that the cancer had spread to her lymph nodes and liver and she didn't have long left.
