Coronation Street SPOILER: Fiz hounded out of Weatherfield in exit storyline

Actress Jennie McAlpine is going on maternity leave

| Updated:

Coronation Street favourite Fiz Brown is set to be hounded out of Weatherfield by newcomer Evelyn.

Actress Maureen Lipman has revealed that her battleaxe alter ego will be at the centre of Fiz’s upcoming exit storyline.

And we predict fans will quickly turn against the interfering OAP for coming between the soap’s favourite couple.

The formidable granny makes her first appearance next week and, at first, refuses to entertain the idea that Tyrone might be her grandson.

But when he and Fiz persist, she reluctantly agrees to listen to them.

Perhaps they’ll soon wish they hadn’t found her, though, as the acid-tongued grandma has been described as the archetypal “battle-axe”.

When Tyrone discovers that she’s being evicted, he insists that she comes to stay – something which doesn’t go down too well with Fiz.

And soon it will become too much for her to cope with…

In quotes printed in the Metro, Maureen says: “Fiz doesn’t stand a chance. No one was ever going to be good enough for Tyrone – not that she thinks he is good enough, either, but she has a grudging liking for this boy and she thinks that the woman he is with is boring.

“She sets out to drive her away, just by being ungracious and critical and generally driving a wedge between them which is a horrible thing to do but there are people like that.”

Maureen, who was made a CBE in 1999, added: “She is a genuine battleaxe without a man to battle, except maybe picking fights with Dev in the corner shop and putting Tyrone in his place regularly. A battleaxe is something that the British public seem to like.

“I hope she gets an asbo, I’d love to see her tagged and doing community work with such bad grace. She is heading for a comeuppance!”

In real life, Jennie McAlpine – who has played Fiz since 2001 – will be heading off on maternity leave to await the arrival of her second child.

And it’s not the first time Maureen has found herself on the famous cobbles, having played temporary Rovers manager Lillian Spencer back in 2002.
