In a first look picture taken from filming, an ambulance and fire crews can be seen having raced to the street to try to save lives.

The only character confirmed to survive is Mary Taylor who can be seen looking happy and healthy in the filming picture.

Earlier this week a cloud of brick dust was seen floating above the set after the dramatic scenes were filmed.

A fan tweeted Jack P. Shepherd asking what it was and he joked there was another tram crash storyline in the works.

He joked: “Brand new story, NEVER seen before in soap history…. A tram crash…”

Soap boss Iain MacLeod announced the shock storyline last year at a press event and revealed a new big villain would be responsible.

He said: “We’re knocking the factory down in a colossal stunt and it will at first appear to be an accident and then be revealed to be some sort of criminal enterprise that caused it all to come down – and somebody will be dying in that collapse.

“It’s is a whodunnit without a murder at the centre – instead it’s gross negligence manslaughter.

“It’ll be every bit as intriguing. We’ll start with the crime and then gradually reveal the motives afterwards.

“Obviously everybody’s out of a job temporarily, there’ll be lots of financial and lifestyle stories that spin off from that point.

“It will have ripples which will extend into the next six or 12 months.”
