Coronation Street fans divided as Sarah Platt turned violent towards Gary Windass

Did he deserve it?

Viewers were divided as Sarah Platt told Gary Windass exactly what she thought of him last night, during a bitter exchange of words after their break-up.

On Wednesday (June 26), Coronation Street fans saw the former couple arguing on the cobbles – before Sarah delivered a shocking blow.

She slapped him around the face.

And while some viewers applauded Sarah’s actions, others called her a hypocrite for resorting to violence so soon after Gary was physical with her.

Last week, Corrie fans were horrified when Gary attacked Sarah just moments after he murdered Rick Neelan.

Losing control of his anger (again), he pushed Sarah against a wall before coming to his senses and leaving her alone.

But this week, the tables were turned when Sarah arranged to meet Gary in order to warn him to stay away from her for good.

She told him: “Gary, I want you to stay away from me and I want you to stay away from my family. I was wrong to think we could stay friends.

“I feel like I don’t even know you anymore.”

Lashing out, he snarled back: “You can delude yourself all you want, but we both know you’re not as perfect as you make out.”

Referring to her involvement in Callum’s death, he continued: “It doesn’t stop you judging me, though, does it?”

As the pair descended into a war of words, with Sarah telling Gary “he gets off on violence”, Gary turned on Sarah’s family, calling Bethany “screwed up”.

Implying that it’s all Sarah’s fault, he added: “If I were Harry, I’d be looking over my shoulder.”

Seeing red, Sarah lashed out at Gary, slapping him in the face before saying: “I feel sorry for you, I really do.”

Some fans thought Gary deserved the slap – and more – with one viewer tweeting: “He deserves more than one slap from Sarah.”

Another said: “Nice slap Sarah. Home truths sometimes hurt.”

A third added: “I think he did deserve that, bring him down a peg or two. They made Gary so bitter and nasty.”

“Deserved more than a slap!” typed one fan, adding: “How can he say that about Bethany when she’s been helping him!!”

Others called Gary the “new Pat Phelan” and said “poor Sarah”.

However, others slammed Sarah’s actions for being no better than Gary’s, after resorting to violence in a moment of rage.

One Twitter user wrote: “Am I the only one who saw the irony? Violence is not okay, no matter who perpetrates it.”

Another said: “This is double standard. She can slap him on the face, but he can’t grab her arm!”

A third typed: “Nobody deserves physical assault, I’m only sorry they didn’t have him hit her back, that would have woken people up and raised awareness of the inequality of that scene!”

“He’s a bleep. And no guy should EVER lift his hand to a woman,” said another. “However, two wrongs don’t make a right. Why is it accepted that women can throw a slap on a guy’s face?”

Viewers know that Gary is now responsible for two deaths – Rana and Rick.

Is he capable of killing again?
