The dramatic shots were accompanied by words promising horror as Peter was shot in the chest by the evil thugs.

But in last night’s episodes, things didn’t play out that way.

As Simon Barlow was left terrified in the factory with the gang tormenting him, Peter raced over to protect his son.

And as he got there a car rolled past slowly with one of the gang holding a gun out of the window and taking aim.

Peter looked horrified as the trigger was pulled and he was soon covered with blood red liquid on his chest.

However, he told a terrified Carla Connor: “It’s paint, it’s just a paint gun.”

The scene was a let-down, and viewers were furious, flocking to social media to share their views.

One wrote: “A paint gun? Seriously!? Fail. #Corrie”

A second commented: ““ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! A PAINT GUN??
