Coronation Street star Sue Devaney explains Debbie Webster’s return

Debbie comes back and is immediately suspicious of Abi

Coronation Street star Sue Devaney has explained why her alter ego Debbie Webster will soon return to Weatherfield.

Sue famously played Debbie from 1984 until 1985 before making a return to the show last year, 34 years after her character’s departure.

Although her 2019 return was short and sweet, Debbie is coming back to the cobbles once again and it seems like she will be sticking around for a while.

Speaking to Entertainment Daily at a recent press event, Sue said: “Business has brought Debbie back to Weatherfield.

‘She lives in Turkey but she was missing her family. She’s very close to her brother and I think she wanted to be around family more.

“The thing with Debbie is, wherever she travels and whatever she does, she always comes back home.

“She has never forgotten where she comes from. She takes comfort in that and, this time around, she thinks ‘I quite like it here.’

“I think she’s going to do a few business deals and stuff but she also wants to make sure her brother is alright.

“He is seeing Abi but she wonders, ‘Is she good enough for him? Is she going to be kind to him? Is she going to be nice to him?'”

Coronation Street Sue Devaney: Debbie returns next week

Debbie will be making her way back to the cobbles next week.

After Abi’s accident, she’s resting at home. But as she knocks back a slug, Peter arrives.

She stuffs it down the side of the sofa and insists to Peter that she didn’t take any medication from the hospital.

Peter is seemingly satisfied but Abi is furious when she realises the morphine is gone.

Abi heads to the Rovers to confront Peter. But what will he say?

Later Carla is suspicious when Peter lies about meeting Abi. When she finds out he’s helping her with her addiction, Carla warns him to be careful reminding him it wasn’t long ago Abi had feelings for him.

Meanwhile, Debbie returns and warns Abi not to mess her brother about. The mechanic assures Debbie she wouldn’t dream of it.

Later Abi calls Peter and assures him she’ll attend the meeting later. As Debbie and Kevin come in, she quickly ends the call.

Debbie offers to cook lunch suggesting to Abi they should get to know each other and Abi has little choice but to accept.

But when Abi disappears as soon as they’ve eaten, Debbie is suspicious. Will Abi tells Kevin and Debbie what’s really going on?

Coronation Street airs Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 7.30pm on ITV.
