It's set to be a very un-merry Christmas for Rita Tanner as the Coronation Street favourite realises she is very, very alone in the world.
Rita is planning a trip to visit Emily in Edinburgh next week, pleased to be visiting her oldest friend.
But she suddenly realises she had promised to feed Mrs MacElroy's cat and needs to find someone to help her while Rita's away herself.
Rita soon gets some bad news when she confides in Jenny that she's no longer going to Edinburgh as Emily has twisted her ankle and can't host her.
However, while searching for a cat feeder, Rita has reached the devastating conclusion that she has no friends.
Poor Rita feels well and truly alone, but at least she has her job at The Kabin, right?
Wrong! Given she'd told them she would be away, Brian has already got a replacement to cover Rita's shifts.
When she tries to return to work, she's met by Gail, who's been hired in her place.
Rita feels completely lost without her friends or her work, but will she realise she still has a place in the hearts of everyone on the Street?
Surrogate daughter Jenny will always be there for Rita.
And despite Gemma being bogged down raising quads and dealing with the fallout from her brother, Paul's accusations of sexual abuse against Kel Hinchley, she needs Rita as much as ever.
Will Rita see that people still love and need her?
Recent reports suggested that things will get worse for Rita before they get better as the soap tackles the issue of OAP loneliness.
But in a devastating twist, no one will realise she is there.
An ITV source told the publication: "Dev puts up the Christmas tree for Rita but doesn't have time to sort the fairy lights.
"She ends up putting the lights on herself but when switching them on she trips and falls, pulling the tree on top of her."
Fortunately, she is said to be discovered by another local, but will it be the wake-up call her nearest and dearest need to take better care of her?
