Coronation Street’s Aggie Bailey leaves Ed over gambling lies

Coronation Street’s Bailey family will be hit by heartbreak, actress Lorna Laidlaw has revealed with Aggie leaving Ed over his gambling lies.

The actress plays matriarch Aggie Bailey on the cobbles and she has told how the pharmacy assistant will be left devastated when she discovers husband Ed is gambling again.

She said: “Ed has got a gambling addiction. He’s gambled before, and promised he’d never do it again.”

But worst of all – Ed made their son Michael take responsibility for the couple losing their lovely detached house and luxury lifestyle when it was his own gambling to blame.

Lorna added: “That’s why Michael took the responsibility on his shoulders and took the blame for Ed.

“It’s a lovely thing for a son to do really, to take that massive thing, because he does not want his mum and dad to split up, which is so sweet. But Ed lost the house and it all gets revealed, really slowly.

“A card gets declined then it starts to escalate. When it is all revealed, it’s absolutely heartbreaking.”

And Lorna originally wanted the couple to split over the betrayal as Aggie discovers the extent of Ed’s problems.

“When I read it, I thought kick him out!” she said.

“But then you read again and what me and Trevor have tried to do is set up how in love they are, and how much they love their kids. Once you’ve got that right, you can see why she would go back to him.

“We tried really hard to make you see how they work together, how funny they are, and the cuddling and kissing. All of that is there before it starts to fall apart. I thought it was really important we show that.

“As it goes on I think she’d be frightened if he had his phone, frightened if he came home and didn’t turn up at work. It’s that fear factor of not trusting somebody. I think it’s looking at that.”

She added: “It’s a very traumatic thing. Your whole existence being taken away because of one person’s actions. It’s a massive thing for a family to go through as well.”

And Aggie will leave Ed after discovering what he has done.

“There’s a massive scene where she does leave, and everyone panics whether she’ll come back again and I think that’s right,” she said.

“She needs space just to compute everything. What do we want and what do we need to make this right again? I don’t think you can do that in the home situation.

“You need to get yourself out of it.”
