“None of us can slow the passage of time, and while we focus on all that has changed in the intervening years, much remains unchanged, including the Gospel of Christ and his teachings.”

The Earl of Wessex read the Queen’s speech to clergy and bishops at Church House, the Westminster headquarters of the Church of England.

The Queen, 95, was unable to attend the event due to her sprained back. Prince Edward said his mother ‘deeply regrets’ not being able to attend the event in person.

This is not the first engagement the monarch has had to miss recently. She previously missed the Sunday Remembrance Service at The Cenotaph on Sunday due to her sprained back. It was only the 7th time in her entire reign that she had missed the service.

The Queen also previously missed COP26 in Glasgow earlier in the month. Her son, Prince Charles, stepped up and attended the summit in her place.

Her Majesty’s absence from many events has been mainly down to advice from her doctors about taking on “light work” due to ill health.
