Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have paid a touching tribute to Princess Diana as they pledged their support to the LGBTQ+ community.

Every month, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex shine a light on different “causes and social issues that matter to us” through the power of social media.

On Saturday morning, they changed who they were following to accounts supporting the LGBTQ+ community as they marked the first day of Pride Month.

Alongside their message they shared a collage of pictures, including one of Harry’s late mother meeting a patient named Gerard McGrath, who was diagnosed with HIV in 1987, at London Lighthouse in 1996.

Diana, who passed away a year after the photo was taken, played a key role in changing attitudes towards AIDS and HIV.

As well as the photo of Diana, the royal couple also included pictures that represented the Elton John AIDS Foundation, the Trevor Project, the Matthew Shepard Foundation and more.

The accompanying message read: “Continuing with our tradition to rotate the accounts we follow based on causes and social issues that matter to us:

“For the month of June we ‘proudly’ shine a light on PRIDE.

“This month we pay tribute to the accounts supporting the LGBTQ+ community – those young and old, their families and friends, accounts that reflect on the past and are hopeful for a deservedly more inclusive future.

“We stand with you and support you. Because it’s very simple: love is love.”

Their followers were quick to respond with messages of support, including a post from Olympic diver Tom Daley who wrote, “This is just AWESOME.”

Last month, the couple honoured Mental Health Awareness Week in the UK and Mental Health Awareness Month in the US.
