Meaning behind Meghan and Harry’s baby’s name Archie Harrison

They announced his name on Wednesday

| Updated:

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex announced today that they have named their newborn son Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor.

The couple announced it in a post on Instagram on Wednesday, which showed a photo of the royal tot meeting his great grandmother the Queen alongside Prince Philip and Meghan’s mother Doria Ragland.

A string of names had been tipped to be the royal baby’s name including Alexander, Spencer and Arthur. But what is the meaning behind Archie’s sweet name?

According to the site BabyCentre, the name Archie has English origins and means “genuine” and “bald”, meaning “bold” or “brave”.

Archie is traditionally a shorter version of the name Archibald.

Harrison, meanwhile, is a sweet tribute to the baby’s father. It means “son of Harry”.

As for Archie’s royal title, it’s been said he could be given the title of Earl of Dumbarton.

Harry was granted that title by his grandmother the Queen on the morning of his wedding last year as well as being given a dukedom.

It comes after the couple gave the world the first glimpse at their newborn son.

The couple proudly showed off their two-day-old beautiful baby boy to cameras inside St George’s Hall at Windsor Castle on Wednesday as the royal tot attended his first photocall.

The tiny newborn was wrapped up in a white blanket and matching hat as proud dad Harry, who wore a grey suit, cradled the tot in his arms.

Speaking about her baby son, Meghan added: “He has the sweetest temperament and he’s really calm and been the dream. It’s been a special few days.”

Harry continued: “It’s great. Parenting is amazing. It’s only been two days, three days, but we’re just so thrilled to have our very own bundle of joy.”

When asked who they think the baby looks more like, Harry said: “Everyone says that babies change so much over two weeks we’re basically monitoring how the changing process happens over this next month really.

“But his looks are changing every single day, so who knows.”

The couple said they are showing their tot to their family later and thanked people for their well-wishes.

The royal couple became parents for the first time this week as they welcomed a baby boy into the world.

Archie was born at 5.26am on Monday and the couple have since enjoyed some peace and quiet at Frogmore Cottage, nestled within the grounds of the royals’ Windsor estate.
