Serial killer Peter Sutcliffe has gained hope he may be released from prison after watching Piers Morgan‘s recent show about a psychopathic murderer, a newspaper report has claimed.
Sutcliffe – dubbed the ‘Yorkshire Ripper’ for killing 13 women and attempting to murder seven more – reportedly wants Good Morning Britain host Piers to feature him in one of his programmes, believing his ‘point of view’ could be represented more accurately than at trial.
Now 73, Sutcliffe was sentenced to 20 life terms at the Old Bailey in 1981.
But according to The Sun, the monster apparently thinks an exploration of his mental state could help him win an appeal.
The newspaper quoted Sutcliffe telling another criminal sentenced to do time at Frankland Prison, County Durham, that he found the recent Psychopath With Piers Morgan interview “interesting” because it covered matters “from all sides”.
He is reported to have said: “I wish someone like him would look at my case because it’s never been done from my point of view.
“If they did it properly they would examine all the faults with my trial and how the judge overruled all the doctors, which was wrong. People don’t realise it was a mental illness but I went on full trial.”
Sutcliffe is also reported to have told those close to him that he intends to lodge another appeal against his incarceration, despite the failure of two previous bids to obtain a parole date and against his life sentence in 2010 and 2011.
A unnamed source is reported to have said: “He genuinely believes that if someone he likes, such as Piers, were to examine his case on TV people would look at it differently.”
The insider also commented that many people at the prison believe it was wrong for Sutcliffe to be permitted to watch Piers’ show.
Piers, 54, described his encounter with killer Paris Bennett, which aired in June, as “the most chilling interview I’ve ever conducted”.
The brash TV personality wasn’t even allowed to sit in the same room as Bennett – serving 40 years for stabbing his four-year-old sister to death when he was 13 – for the chat.
