The Met Office website reports that: “Snow showers with strong winds and icy conditions will make travelling difficult, especially over the hills and in northern coastal areas.”

They warn this could affect roads and railways with longer journey times and and delays to public transport services.

In the latest forecast, Alex Deakin Met Office meteorologist said: “Ice is likely to be a problem overnight and first thing tomorrow morning too.

“The big picture shows a lot of cloud across the UK, but further north the colder air is allowing some of this to fall as snow across northern Scotland.”

He continued: “The winds are going to get even stronger overnight across northern Scotland and we will see more snow showers getting down to lower levels so that leaves potential for blizzards.”

Speaking of the ice threat for the rest of the country, he said:

“It could well turn icy through the evening, overnight, and into tomorrow morning… the road surfaces could get down below freezing almost anywhere so it could be icy on Thursday morning.”

The snow will be moving down the country on Thursday as there will be”Snow showers throughout the day coming across Eastern England.”

With Thursday set to be a “crisp, cold winter’s day” temperatures will start around freezing and stay cold resulting in a “severe frost” on Thursday night.

It’s set to remain cold throughout the weekend and into next week.

The long-range forecast from the Met Office also warns that the end of January and early February have “an increased likelihood of cold weather being established across all of the UK, with temperatures continuing a downward trend to become cold or very cold.”

The Met Office added: “This would bring a greater risk of snow, ice and widespread frost, particularly across northern parts of the country.”
