X Factor’s Matt Cardle reveals truth behind Meghan messages

It was reported Meghan slid into Matt's DMs before she met Prince Harry

Matt Cardle has insisted claims he was exchanging messages with the Duchess of Sussex before she met Prince Harry had been blown out of proportion.

Last month, it was reported that Meghan slid into Matt’s DMs in 2015 – months before she met Harry – and told him she was a “big fan” of his work after he followed her on Instagram first.

Speaking about the rumours on today’s Lorraine, The X Factor winner Matt said he thinks it’s “funny of what can be made of nothing nowadays”.

When asked about the reports, Matt told host Lorraine Kelly: “It was so little then, if not nothing. It’s nothing now.

“It was absolutely nothing. It’s just funny what can be made of nothing nowadays.”

It comes after a source told The Sun: “Matt followed Meghan initially in early 2015 because he thought she was a beautiful star from Suits.

“But he was stunned when she followed him immediately back and started messaging him. She said she was a big fan of his work.

“Matt couldn’t believe a Hollywood star like Meghan would even know who he was so he was very flattered and they chatted a little bit online before she suggested meeting up.”

The insider added that Matt then met his girlfriend Amber Hernaman and “knew it wasn’t appropriate to keep talking to Meghan so he ended up ghosting her”.

The source said there could have been a “connection” between Meghan and Matt but “the timing as wrong”.

Meanwhile, Matt is in a serious relationship with Amber – who he said has kept him sober after battling drugs and alcohol addiction following his stint on The X Factor.

Earlier this month, singer Max George denied he was texting Meghan after reports claimed the pair were exchanging messages before she met Harry too.

Speaking on This Morning, Max said: “I don’t know where that came from. I did read something over the weekend. I also read about looking for an Englishman, I don’t get why they’re doing this to her.

“There was nothing from my side.”

Host Phillip Schofield asked if that meant there was something from Meghan’s side, to which Max replied: “There wasn’t. There was nothing in it.”
