Woman slammed for ‘stealing’ best friend’s baby name that was suggested by her dead mum

The decision was branded "cruel" and "selfish"

The internet has come out in force to blast a woman for taking a baby name that her best friend was saving for her own first born – having got the idea from her late mum.

Posting on discussion website Reddit, a user asked others if she was being unreasonable for wanting to sever all ties with her pal for ‘stealing’ the name.

Telling her story, she explained that she herself isn’t going to be pregnant any time soon, but her friend is expecting and she couldn’t be happier for her.

She wrote: “As best friends do, we started discussing baby names. She asked me if I had any baby names picked out for my future children and I told her my mother had suggested a name years ago for my future daughter that I absolutely fell in love with.

“It’s super unique and it’s a name that originates from the country she was born in. My mother is no longer alive, so this is something I really wanted to do in the future so my potential daughter could have a connection to her grandmother.”

Writing further, the user said her friend later announced the name’s she’d chosen alongside a scan pic on Facebook.

She continued: “In the post she revealed the name that she had picked for her daughter. It was the name I told her that I had picked out for my future daughter.”

The user went on to explain she feels “absolutely devastated”, particularly since her pregnant friend knew how much the name meant to her, but decided to use it anyway.

The user went on: “She says it’s just a name and since she’s pregnant before me she gets to use whatever name she wants. I told her she’s being heartless and asked her how she can do this to someone she sees as a sister.”

Concluding the post, she said that as her friend won’t change her mind, she’s considering ending all “communication with her”.

The point of the post was to ask other users if she was in the wrong and they overwhelmingly got behind her, branding the friend’s actions “cruel” and “selfish”.

One replied: “She straight up ripped that off, knowing how it would hurt you, I have no idea how she could be so selfish. Cut her out of your life and when you do have a kid, use the name your mom suggested. Don’t let her ruin that for you.”

Another said: “I would have [you’re in the right] even if the name wasn’t connected to the mother/grandmother. You don’t go around and steal your friend’s baby names, it’s very rude.”

Someone else argued: “There’s no such thing as ‘stealing’ a baby name… under normal circumstances. You get to name your kid whatever you want, and just because somebody else likes the name too doesn’t give them dibs. But this is definitely one of the few cases where using the same name feels… cruel.
