Steps’ successful comeback overshadows Spice Girls’ reunion issues

Oh well... At least we have Steps!

| Updated:

When Steps made their hugely successful comeback last week, who didn’t think to themselves that the Spice Girls must be kicking themselves that they’d organised their 20th anniversary so well.

Although there had been talk of a reunion and a one-off show, Victoria Beckham and Mel C both stood their ground and refused to get involved leaving Geri Horner, Mel B and Emma Bunton to wave the flag.

GEM was born – see what they did there? – and a single was recorded… a tour was planned.

And then…

Well, Geri got pregnant and all those exciting plans fell apart, much to the delight of fans who were pretty dubious about a Posh and Sporty-free comeback.

Now Mel C has once again drawn a line under any potential reunions.

Speaking to Davina McCall on The Nightly Show she said that she was confident a comeback would NEVER work for the girls.

She also stated that she didn’t think they could – like Take That – work without various members involved.

“It’s not really doing the band justice to go out as a four piece,” she said.

“Whoever’s missing, it doesn’t matter. I think for me Spice Girls is like a jigsaw puzzle.

“‘It’s different to other bands. Look at Take That – they’re going out as a three piece and they’re brilliant. I love the boys!

“But with the Spice Girls, everything about us was the individuality and what that created together.”

Even though she said there is no chance of a reunion she said she had a blast performing 2 Become 1 with Victoria Beckham at New Year.

‘Even looking at the picture I feel quite emotional because I haven’t been on stage with any of the girls since London 2012,” she said of that moment.

‘In my history of being a Spice girl, that was my favourite thing. It was so incredible!’

Meanwhile the GEM project looks unlikely to come to fruition.

Speaking before the birth of Geri’s baby in January, a spy explained about the band being put on the back burner: “Getting all the girls in the studio at the same time proved a tough task.

“What they needed was one main boss-style figure to pull the strings otherwise they would be constantly in limbo.”
