Weather warning issued ahead of Bank Holiday heatwave

Level 3 warning is just one below that of a "national emergency"

An amber heatwave warning has been issued by the Met Office ahead of the Bank Holiday weekend.

The level 3 notice cautions people to take “heatwave action” and is triggered when the Met Office has more than 90% confidence that “threshold” temperatures will be met.

The warning indicates the elderly, people with underlying health conditions and very young children are most at risk and requires social and healthcare services to target assisting such groups of people.

And despite the lure of the enjoying the sun at the beach or in parks and gardens, health expert have suggested it is better to avoid the sun during the roasting heat.

This weekend could end up as the hottest August Bank Holiday ever, with forecasters predicting temperatures may reach 33C in parts of the country.

The East of England is believed to be where it will be the most sweltering and has duly been issued with the level 3 warning.

The rest of England is currently subject to to a level 2 warning and Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales have not been issued with weather warnings as yet.

The Met Office is reported to have said: “There is a 90 per cent probability of heat health criteria being met between 9am on Saturday and 9am on Monday in parts of England.

“High pressure will build across England, bringing very warm or hot conditions to many parts of the country during Saturday and Sunday.  

“Highest temperatures look to be across the eastern England, with western parts turning less hot Sunday.”

Monday is expected to benefit from some breezier and fresher conditions, move across the country from the east.

The highest temperature for the August Bank Holiday weekend was recorded near London in 2001 as a whopping 31.5C.
