Up to eight inches of snow forecast in UK as temperatures plummet

Cold snap could continue into next month

| Updated:

Temperatures are expected to fall to -10C as a polar freeze sweeps across the UK.

Heavy snow and wintry showers have also been forecast in the next few days, with colder weather predicted for most of the country.

There may be up to eight inches of snowfall in parts of Britain including Lake District and Carlisle, Cumbria, by the end of the month, the Express reports.

Seven inches could fall in the north-west, including Liverpool, and Yorkshire, while heavy snow is also expected in parts of Wales and Northern Ireland.

It has been reported the cold snap could start on Monday and continue throughout January.

The frosty conditions are also expected to carry on into next month, too.

Met Office Chief Meteorologist Andy Page said: “On Monday and early Tuesday, a band of heavier rain, hill snow and strong winds will move quickly south across the UK, followed by wintry showers for the middle of the week.

“Some of the showers will be heavy bringing a mixture of rain, hail, sleet and snow, most frequently across parts of the north and west.”

The Met Office also warned: “As we go through the rest of the month and into February the longer-range outlook indicates it will remain cold and possibly very cold for a time.”

However, before then, rain is expected on Sunday – with some hill snow spreading in a south-eastward direction.

It is expected to hit northern England and Wales by the afternoon, according to the BBC.

On the brighter side, it should be mostly dry elsewhere with even a few sunny spells poking through.

Heading into next week, rain is considered likely across northern and western areas at the start of next week.

But the weather will continue to become ever more colder between Monday and Wednesday.

On higher ground, this rainfall will appear as snow. Breezy and unsettled conditions are likely to follow, with snow considered possible for a lot of the UK.

London and Kent are forecast to experience falling snowflakes on January 27.
