UK brought to a standstill as heavy snow hits

The cold weather is causing chaos

| Updated:

A heavy snowfall has hit much of Southern England and Wales and has caused major disruption.

And more snow is predicted to fall in certain parts of the UK today (Friday February 1).

Much of Britain remains under a yellow warning for snow and ice.

Conditions seem to be the worst in Southwest England and South Wales, with the Met Office upgrading the areas with an amber “risk to life” warning.

A weather warning issued by the Met Office said: “There is a good chance that some rural communities could become cut off.

“Power cuts are likely and other services, such as mobile phone coverage, may be affected.

“Following overnight snowfall an area of snow is likely to continue during Friday morning. Further accumulations are expected with 5 cm new snow in places on top of any existing snow cover.”

Some flights have been put on hold, schools are closed and drivers aren’t able to access certain roads as the big freeze sets in throughout the country.

Drivers have been warned from the roads as more bad weather is expected.

Currently, no planes are leaving Bristol airport and Bournemouth airport remains closed. Flights have also been delayed at Heathrow airport.

In some areas, snow is already deeper than the 10cm forecast during a severe weather warning from the Met Office earlier this week.
