Coronation Street star reveals he auditioned for Home and Away

He missed out on the part and came to these shores instead

Coronation Street star Tristan Gemmill has admitted he once auditioned for Aussie soap Home and Away.

Appearing on This Morning today to talk about his Corrie character Robert Preston’s current dramatic storylines, the actor revealed things were nearly very different.

Summer stand-in host Eamonn Holmes brought up the fact that Tristan had moved to Australia when he was five-years-old and lived there until he returned to the UK aged 25.

Trading sun, sea and sand for the cold English summer might not be everyone’s idea of fun, which is exactly what Eamonn pointed out when he suggested Tristan should have gone into Aussie soaps Neighbours or Home and Away instead.

It was then that the former Casualty actor revealed he HAD auditioned for Home and Away before.

“I did an audition for the policeman on Home and Away,” before quipping “that’s why I’m here!”

But him missing out on the part in the sun-soaked soap was their loss and our gain as things look set to get even more dramatic for Robert on the Street.

“He’s got a few plates spinning and they’re starting to go out of control,” Tristan told Eamonn and co-host Ruth Langsford.

The actor was referring to the current plot which sees Robert and girlfriend Michelle Connor the subject of a vendetta after Robert set his old drug dealer mate up with the police. But is Rich really behind the campaign?

After admitting on This Morning that Robert was bedded in by the show as the nice guy who Michelle could turn to in her hour of need, everything has now been flipped as Robert’s lying, cheating past has been revealed.

Eamonn said that the Bistro owner was on a very different path these days, and Tristan replied:

“The producers and writers are trying to do a bit more of that, push it to the darker side. That’s what they’ve done with the Bethany plot for example.”

But fans were more distracted by Tristan’s accent than listening to what he actually he had to say!

It turns out the actor isn’t actually northern at all, and his accent left viewers shocked.
