Trisha Goddard tells Lorraine why she felt “very, very ugly” after cancer battle

She says she feels womanly again after turning 60

Trisha Goddard surprised everyone recently when she revealed that she’d quietly divorced her husband of 20 years, Peter Gianfrancesco.

She appeared on Lorraine today to discuss what really happened, and how she’s felt since turning 60.

Kicking off, Lorraine asked: “Everybody’s been calling this a secret divorce – so what happened?”

Trisha replied: “It wasn’t a secret, I just kept it private for as long as I could.

“But I recovered from breast cancer and I have to say in the end it proved a bit of a death knell for my relationship.

Lorraine then mentioned how long the two had been married, saying 20 years was an awfully long time.

Trisha agreed, saying: “He absolutely was my rock, but then things really started going downhill.

“I think both of us changed, I know he did. There’s a whole thing around body image, people look at me and say ‘you’re fine,’ but how you feel about breast cancer and how it affects your love life…”

She went on: “There’s a statistic out that says there’s a very high risk of women’s marriages and relationships breaking down after breast cancer, although if a man has cancer it’s not the same way.

“I ended up feeling very, very ugly. I ended up if you like being made to feel ugly and un-womanly and what have you.

“It looks all put together, thanks to modern techonology and drugs and things like that, but it really does affect you.

“I guess when you’re ‘over’ the main bit, people expect your mind, body and soul to snap back, and you can’t.

“I did work very hard at keeping the marriage together but there came a point where I had to call time.

“Mentally, physically, everything else, I just couldn’t do it any more.”

The interview ended on a happier note, however, when Lorraine revealed that Trisha’s dating a new partner.

Trisha says he “gets” her and she’s been made to feel womanly again.

And she also said she felt much happier after her 60th than her 50th – as that was when she was diagnosed with breast cancer.
