Cheryl and Mitzy were eventually reunited on Channel 5’s The Yorkshire Vet.

Speaking about the day Mitzy was stolen she told hosts Eamonn Holmes and Ruth Langsford: “I just never saw her. We put posters out to look for her and phoned the vets and kennels but there was nothing.

“I thought someone had took her. She doesn’t wander off.”

Ruth, 57, then asked: “So did you eventually learn to live without her and just assumed you would never see her again?”

To which Cheryl said: “Yeah. My son was devastated because he’s been brought up with her.

“I just told him she had gone missing.”

Cheryl went on to explain that she was worried that Mitzy wouldn’t recognise her when reuniting with her.

She said: “I didn’t think she was going to recognise me.

“But when I saw her I was shocked because she was pure black before. When I saw her she was grey.”

Speaking about how her canine pal has fitted back into the family she said: “She’s fitted in perfectly as if she’s never been anywhere.”
