Teenager shares grisly snaps of horrific sunburn with blisters like tennis balls

She had to endure a nine-hour flight home

A teenage girl has shared gruesome photos of the horrific sunburn she got while holidaying in Cuba.

Maisie Squires, 16, from Leeds, developed blisters so big they could be seen clearly protruding under her T-shirt.

The teenager suffered extensive burns across her entire back during an hour-long snorkeling trip, despite wearing sun cream, as the tropical rays scorched her skin.

The next day, Maisie had to endure a nine-hour flight back to the UK.

Posting about the ordeal on social media and offering a stark warning to other holidaymakers, Maisie wrote: “So mind how swollen and disgusting my back looks, but this is what my sunburn turned into this morning just before a nine-hour flight back home to England. So shocked! A&E it is! (wear sun cream).

“I was snorkelling for one hour and my back was showing, but I didn’t realise my back was burning and I did wear sun cream.

“I’ve blistered like that because the sun was very hot in Cuba on Tuesday and I have very fair skin.”

In one pic, someone lifts Maisie’s top to expose her red and black skin – and two huge yellow blisters, one of which is so big it droops under the weight of the fluid within.

One pal, Nicola Hartshorn Procter, commented: “This happened to me with factor 50 on my legs as I’m so fair and burn. I feel for you, that looks so sore, I had blisters but not that big.

“Hope you start healing and recover soon.”

Another, Courtney Noel, told her: “Looks like 3rd degree burns almost.”

A third named Clara Ebanks wrote: “That looks so sore, hope it’s not done too much damage to your skin.”

Someone else called Kimberly Thomas told Maisie she needs “medical attention ASAP”, commenting: “I am very surprised if they let you fly. They are severe burns and you may need a skin graft. You’re at high risk of infection too. Your body may also go into shock at any time due to the burns and also sun stroke. I’m sorry to worry you.”

Later, Maisie shared an updated snap to show that her blisters had gone down.

Speaking today (July 26), the teenager confirmed she had been treated at A&E, writing on social media: “The blisters on my back are still very sore and I still cannot sit back or lay down on my back.

“I did not get them removed or anything as the hospital said to me that they will just have to pop on their own.”
