Susanna Reid reveals she ditched alcohol after GP warned of ‘facial scarring’

She said some of her best memories were fuelled by booze

Good Morning Britain’s Susanna Reid stopped drinking after her GP told her it could leave her with permanent scars.

The presenter, 49, has opened up about her decision to quit drinking and revealed she originally approached her doctor about her “flushed” skin – only to be warned about the damaging effects of drinking and how it causes blood vessels to burst.

Writing in The Sunday Times Magazine, Susanna said: “I gave up because a doctor told me to. I was concerned because my skin was flushed, I kept getting flare-ups and blemishes, and they were leaving red scars.

“I’d tried all manner of creams and washes, but I knew deep down that what was happening to my skin was probably a manifestation of what I was putting into my body.”

Susanna, who admitted she “loved drinking”, said many of her best memories were from nights on the lash at the clubs of Soho.

The mum-of-three continued: “I loved the whole bacchanalian pleasure of alcohol: the fizz of prosecco, the soft bubbles of pink champagne, the rich depths of a pint of Guinness, the decadence of a shot of spirits. I had no issues with how it affected my behaviour – I had a lot of fun and no one got hurt.”

Susanna stopped drinking in August but has had the occasional drink since then.

She likened her abstinence to “the end of a relationship” when you’re not “ready” to say it’s all over, but clarified she “regretted” every slip-up as they made her grouchy and gave her mega hangovers.

Earlier this year, Susanna pointed to weight gain as another reason she ditched the booze.

Speaking to Mail On Sunday’s Femail in January, she said she loved vodka shots in particular but was told she needed to lose weight or risked developing type-2 diabetes and other serious illnesses, including cancer and heart disease.

She told the paper: “[Booze] adds the weight on. It wasn’t good for my skin and it’s not great for your memory and I just wasn’t willing to pay the price anymore.”

Susanna last month revealed how her early starts on GMB also didn’t help her weight.

She said on Lorraine: “I found waking up so early in the morning […] you’re in energy deficit and all your body can think is, ‘have toast, have biscuits’ and you can pile it on really.”
