Britain’s Got Talent ‘steps up security over fears of possible acid attack’

A rep told ED! the show takes safety and security very seriously

A new report claims security has been stepped up around Britain’s Got Talent, amid fears of a possible acid attack.

The Daily Star says the show chiefs are “on high alert” after a spree of similar attacks in London last year.

Those auditioning this week have taken to Twitter to confirm strong security checks seem to be in place at the London try-outs.

One person, using the Twitter handle @h2005_uk, wrote: “London Palladium are stopping people taking opened bottles of water/drink in…

“Then they’re selling 500ml bottles of water to audience members for £2.50. Presumably due to risk of acid attacks? They didn’t do this a year ago.”

ED! approached the ITV show for comment.

A BGT spokesperson said: “We take the safety around the show, judges, presenters, contestants and audiences very seriously and whilst we wouldn’t discuss details of our security measures, we continually review security procedures to ensure they meet our needs.”

This year’s series – which will air from April – has already has its fair share of drama.

Auditions kicked off with an unexpected incident when one auditionee used flames in his act, according to The Mirror.

A contestant from Greece, called Bambas, performed a plate-smashing routine, followed by a trick where he balanced a glass of flames on his head.

The first part went well, with all four judges rushing the stage to join in, smashing crockery and even throwing plates at poor Ant and Dec.

When Simon Cowell, 58, finally returned to his seat, he threw his own BGT mug on stage too, with the liquid inside going everywhere.

But things got a little more dangerous when Bambas dropped a glass of fire on stage, forcing presenters Ant and Dec, both 42, to save the day by running on with water to put out the flames.

Nice work, guys!
