Spice Girls singer reveals harsh comment during Hollywood audition

Her dreams of movie stardom were left in tatters

Back in their mid-Nineties heyday, when they were cartwheeling their way to successive number ones and having dolls made in their image, it felt like the Spice Girls could do anything.

Alas, it turns out that wasn’t the case.

Geri Horner – aka Geri Halliwell – aka Ginger Spice – has revealed that towards the end of that decade, she auditioned for a part in a major Hollywood film.

But she ended up leaving with her tail between her legs after a casting director cut her down with a rather unflattering comment.

The Watford-born star, now 45, told Digital Spy that she flew to the States to apply for a role in a well-known action movie starring Keanu Reeves and Laurence Fishburne.

She recalled: “I once auditioned for The Matrix – it was only for a small part.

“The casting director said to me: ‘Stop frowning, you look like a needy girl at a prom!’

“I just walked out of there like a needy girl at a prom.”

Things haven’t turned out too badly for the mum-of-two, though. A full-on Spice Girls reunion may not have got off the ground yet, but she’s written several children’s books and had loads of TV work.

Indeed, her new singing show All Together Now – which sees hopefuls compete in front of a HUNDRED judges to win a grand prize of £50,000 – begins on BBC One on Saturday.

The premise is that if a judge likes a contestant’s singing, he or she will join in with them. And the more judges who join in, the bigger the hopeful’s score will be.

Speaking about the programme that she fronts with comedian Rob Beckett, Geri told the Huffington Post: “I think it’s a people show. It’s stripped-back and the antithesis of what everything is right now. It’s who we are.

“We live in an airbrushed world, and I think what’s happened is that we’ve put our fingers to the wind and really felt what the public are thinking.

“We just want honesty and a bit of a laugh. It’s not a serious talent show. This is about people coming together, enjoying music, seeing who’s the best and we want to join in with you. That’s it.”

Sounds like it might just add some Spice to our Saturday night’s viewing…
