Richard Hammond ‘airlifted to hospital with serious injuries following crash’

Presenter was taking part in mountain race

Former Top Gear star Richard Hammond has reportedly been airlifted to hospital with serious injuries following a car crash.

The incident occurred during a mountain race in Switzerland, with Swiss press reporting that the presenter crashed on a closed road.

Photos posted to Twitter show a car in flames alongside a road at the Bergrennen Hemberg event.

Local media are reporting that his £2million car left the track after catching fire.

A spokesperson from the St Gallen police said the injured driver was taken to hospital by air ambulance.

Hammond has been filming The Grand Tour, which he stars in alongside ex-Top Gear co-hosts Jeremy Clarkson and James May, in Switzerland.

Just a few weeks ago, Hammond announced he was steering clear of death-defying stunts for his beautiful family.

“I’ve a beautiful wife and two beautiful daughters. I’m not going to risk leaving them. Not for their sake, but for mine.”

This followed the daredevil – nicknamed The Hamster – coming off his bike and being knocked out while filming for the upcoming Amazon series.

Fans have shared posts of his visit to Switzerland on social media.

The 47-year-old was famously involved in a terrible smash back in 2006, crashing a Vampire dragster at 288mph, while filming Top Gear – which left him in a coma.

When he woke up, he didn’t recognise his wife, Amanda.

The couple have two daughters: Isabella, 16, and Willow, 13.
