Peter Andre reveals Ant and Dec “rivalry”

Singer also admits grannies are now big part of his fanbase

Pop star Peter Andre has revealed he once had an intense “rivalry” with Ant and Dec.

The Mysterious Girl singer, who is headlining the Stepback 90s tour, told ITV’s Zoe Ball on Saturday that he regarded Geordie double act PJ and Duncan as fierce competitors for top slot in the charts.

He was asked by the host: “I guess you were quite competitive with all the other pop acts back in the day?”

Peter replied: “Of course it was different then. It’s so funny when you think back because even PJ and Duncan, as they were then, we would walk past each other and be like, ‘Wassup?’

“Oh yeah. Rivals! I would never do that now.”

Peter, who has been a regular guest on Ant and Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway, said all the acts on the Stepback 90s tour were now close friends.

“Now when you see them, we all get on so well, so to be able to go on stage after all these years with all these groups that we once competed with, to now all being friends is great.”

Joining the star on stage are reformed Irish girlband B*witched and Boyzlife, featuring Westlife’s Brian McFadden and Keith Duffy of Boyzone.

Support acts include 5ive, S Club and East 17 , all of which now have just three members, along with Blazin’ Squad, Big Brovaz and Booty Luv.

Peter added: “It’s so fun to do this. The weirdest thing is 22 years ago I filled out Wembley Arena and I’ve never been back since.

“I’m now going back to Wembley Arena headlining this 90s show with all the artists we all knew when we were growing up.”

Peter also revealed on the show that his fan base now comprises “nans” rather than “girls”.

“Here’s something that’s changed Zoe, and I need to tell you this,” he said.

“This is how times have changed for me. Back in the day, a girl would come up to me and say, ‘I love you Pete’.  Now, they come up and say ‘My nan loves you, Pete’.

“That’s the difference from now to then. But they do all come to the shows, and there’s generations, sometimes three generations. It’s wonderful.”
