Queen passes two of her patronages to Meghan Markle eight months after she joins the royal family

She will be taking on more duties

The Duchess of Sussex’s royal patronages have been announced and they include two organisations that the Queen once looked over.

Kensington Palace released a statement on Twitter today (10 January), which began: “The Duchess of Sussex will become Patron of four organisations that reflect the causes and issues with which she has long been associated including the arts, access to education, support for women and animal welfare.”

The Queen has passed two of her patronages on to her granddaughter-in-law, including the National Theatre and the Association of Commonwealth Universities.

It comes eight months after Meghan joined the royal family by marrying Prince Harry last May.

Meghan, who is a big animal lover, will also be patron of animal charity The Mayhew.

The actress is a huge supporter of animal welfare. She has two rescue dogs, which now live with a friend in the US.

Employment charity Smart Works is the fourth organisation that the 37-year-old will support. She visited the headquarters today and was all smiles as she met workers and those who are being supported by the charity.

Smart Works provides coaching and clothing to unemployed women to help them get back on their feet.
