Royals asked for a quiet word…

Radio 1 DJ Greg James has revealed he got a telling off from the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge after he mocked their daughter Princess Charlotte on her first day of school.

The young royal started at St Thomas’s Battersea back in September and, upon her arrival, the polite tot shook hands with her new teacher.

Accompanied by her mum, dad and elder brother Prince George, “excited” Charlotte made her way into class with the world watching.

Commenting on his breakfast show, Greg joked about the handshake and said: “Who the hell shakes hands with their teacher on the first day?”

Fast-forward a couple of weeks and Greg bumps into the royal parents at Radio 1’s Teen Hero Awards.

They said: ‘We were listening on the morning of little Charlotte’s first day, and we want to talk to you about the handshaking thing….’

Greg said Prince William and Kate revealed they had been listening to the show on the morning that Charlotte started school and wanted a quiet word with him.

Greg revealed: “They said: ‘We were listening on the morning of little Charlotte’s first day, and we want to talk to you about the handshaking thing….'”

He added: “I went: ‘Oh God, no!'”

Greg continued: “They’d heard me saying this school was so posh they had to shake hands with their teacher every day.”

Trying to dig himself out of the hole, he added: “They were not like that in my day – you were pleased if you got a smile.”

However, Greg seems to think all is forgiven with the royals.

He added: “I’m sure it’s all absolutely fine.”

Earlier this week, the couple revealed that George and Charlotte had begged to attend the Royal Variety Performance with their parents, only to be told by Kate: “Not on a school night!”
