Australian Prince Harry superfan Daphne Dunne has passed away just three days after receiving a birthday card from the Duke and Duchess of Sussex for her 99th birthday.

Daphne won the heart of Prince Harry when he met her on several royal tours of Australia, after she cheekily kissed the royal when he met him in 2015.

When he visited Sydney again in 2017, she camped out to meet him and was rewarded with a hug from Harry, who said: “Oh, it’s you.”

When Harry, who described her as his “favourite Australian”, visited once again with wife Meghan last year, he introduced the pair.

According to Daphne, the Duchess told her: “I’m so happy to finally meet you, I’ve heard so much about you.”

The war widow, who loved Harry for his work with veterans, had been in hospital suffering from pneumonia for two months when she passed away on Monday.

In a post on her Instagram account, her family wrote: “The simple act of stopping Daphne in the street and holding her hand meant more to Daphne than anyone could ever imagine.

“She spent a large part of her life representing the women of the Australian Army and her two husbands Lt. Albert Crowne VC MM and John Patrick Dunne, ensuring that their service to Australia was never forgotten.

“We, her family, would like to thank everyone for the love and support they showed Daphne.”

A spokesman for the royal family said the Duke and Duchess were “deeply saddened by the news” and will write to Daphne’s relatives privately.

Only days before the Royal couple had sent Daphne a letter congratulating her on her milestone.

The couple reportedly wrote: “Dear Daphne, my wife and I send our warmest wishes to you on the occasion of your 99th birthday on Friday.

“We hope you have a wonderful celebration surrounded by family and friends and that you’ve managed to escape hospital!

“Congratulations on reaching this important and impressive milestone before your centenary year next year. Harry and Meghan.”
