Piers Morgan hits out at claims Meghan and Harry criticism is ‘racist’

Can mocking the royals be deemed 'bullying'?

| Updated:

Piers Morgan has insisted claims the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are being subjected to ‘bullying’ motivated by racism over their summer travel plans are wide of the mark.

Earlier this week the holidaying Good Morning Britain presenter took aim at the couple of Instagram as he uploaded a snap of himself sitting in an economy seat during a flight to the south of France.

“Memo to ‘eco-warriors’ Meghan & Harry: this is what economy to Nice looks like. Try it some time,” the outspoken ex newspaper editor sniped, hashtagging the picture ‘#ManOfThePeople’.

The Prince and his wife have come under fire for taking four private jet journeys recently, despite encouraging environmental awareness.

They enjoyed a private getaway in Nice last week, with Sir Elton John allowing them to stay in his £15million mansion with their baby son Archie.

The singing star also defended Meghan and Harry’s transport decisions, noting he footed the bill for their flights and also made a contribution on their behalf to ensure the journey was carbon neutral.

However, it appears vocal critic of the couple Piers has noted some observers believe there may be other reasons behind the royal pile on.

It’s not ‘racist’ or ‘bullying’ to criticise Meghan and Harry for preaching about the environment then jumping on endless private planes,” he tweeted this morning.

“It’s calling out hypocrisy.”

Piers continued: “They should either shut up with the preaching or practise what they preach.”

Commenters on social media were split over Piers’ reaction, but many of his supporters backed him up.

Agree 100%,” said one follower on Twitter.

“You are SO right,” agreed another.

A third added: “Spot on. I have no problem with them jetting around the world doing what the hell they want. When they start preaching about the environment though, well things get a bit awkward don’t they.”

However, not everyone was on board with Piers’ argument.

One tweeter responded: “You calling out hypocrisy is the most hypocritical thing I’ve ever witnessed.”

And another person said: “You are the air being let out of a child’s ball.”

“It’s just boring. Leave her alone,” concluded another.
