Pregnant BBC Breakfast star Steph McGovern admits she nearly vomited on co-host Charlie Stayt

Better out than in

BBC Breakfast host Steph McGovern has revealed she had a “rough start” to her pregnancy.

In a candid discussion on the programme this morning (July 15), the presenter, 37, admitted she once nearly threw up on her co-star Charlie Stayt due to a bad bout of morning sickness.

Steph, who announced her pregnancy over the weekend, was congratulated by her BBC Breakfast colleagues on air as they reviewed the day’s newspapers.

The popular presenter admitted she found all the messages she received “quite overwhelming” and jokingly referred to an incident in 2018 that saw fans mistakenly wish her congratulations on being pregnant.

She said on the programme: “Last year I was like, ‘I’m not with child, I’m with pot belly’, as that’s what I was with. But now I am actually growing a human.”

The others asked how she felt and Steph said she had “a rough start”, adding: “Charlie nearly got watermelon over him one morning.”

BBC journalist Sally Nugent offered a helping hand and told Steph she would gladly be her midwife, having been birthing partner to co-star Victoria Fritz after she famously went into labour live on air in 2016.

Steph took to Twitter on Sunday (July 14) to confirm she is expecting after the Sun quoted a source who said the couple are “absolutely thrilled” at the prospect of starting a family.

They told the publication: “Steph and her girlfriend are absolutely thrilled. Everyone at the Beeb is delighted too — she is one of the most popular faces on and off the red sofa.”

On Twitter, the mum-to-be told fans: “I see my news is out! Yep, I am no longer with pot belly…… I am now with child. #babyonboard.”

Last year, she offered a hilarious response to BBC Breakfast viewers who thought she was pregnant, squashing the rumours by tweeting she is “with pot belly”.

In an interview with MailOnline at the time, she said she would “definitely be in the wrong job” if she got offended by such comments, admitting that an aunt once asked her if she was expecting after seeing her on TV.

Speaking further, Steph said she responded to the rumours to set the record straight and make sure her boss didn’t rush to arrange maternity cover.
