As the pair sat down and started the interview Piers confessed he had waited three decades to meet Stephen.
The professor jokingly replied: “Get on with it.”
He opened up about being offered a seat on Sir Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic.
He revealed: “I can tell you what will make me happy, to travel in space.
“I thought no one would take me but Richard Branson has offered me a seat on Virgin Galactic and I said yes immediately.”
Reflecting back on his interview with the physicist Piers told co-host Susanna Reid: “It’s something that’s been on my bucket list.
“He’s an incredible man. You have to give him the questions a month in advance so he has the time to process the answers – it takes him hours.”
The star added: “He has two carers and an assistant. He’s like a normal lad down the pub.”
The presenter also revealed Stephen’s obsession with American pin up Marilyn Monroe.
He continued: “He’s Monroe mad!
“He’s got posters of her and a mug with her face on it in his office.”

“They’re trying to be a bit American for me. I want to see who works. But I’d be brilliant.”
