Piers Morgan hits back after being accused of faking hospitalisation

Fans cry 'publicity stunt'

Eagle-eyed fans have accused TV presenter Piers Morgan of faking his recent illness, after spotting one odd detail in his hospital bed selfie.

The Good Morning Britain host posted a picture of himself from his hospital bed on Friday, where he claimed he had been admitted for a gastroscopy.

He captioned the image: “Bad news: I’m not dying. I can only apologise for all the distress I know this will cause some people.”

The presenter has joked that his illness is the result of eating a mouthful of vegan sausage roll on Monday’s show, and insisted that he’ll be well enough to get back to work promptly.

“Monday, 6.40am: I eat one mouthful of vegan sausage roll. Friday, 11am: hospitalised for gastroscopy on inflamed, exploding innards. I’m doing the maths,” he tweeted.

But one observant fan has questioned whether the stay was genuine – pointing out that Piers appears to wearing regular clothes underneath his hospital gown.

“Why has Piers Morgan got a hospital gown on with his own clothes underneath, publicity stunt??” the fan said.

They weren’t the only one to notice – another fan said “Didn’t think anyone wore anything under a hospital gown. Strange. I might be wrong though.”

But there may be another explanation for the presenters layer’s – one fan suggested the choice was hygiene related.

“Nice to see you’re wearing a protective layer under that repugnant hospital gown. They do not sterilise them!!!!” they said.

But Piers has taken to twitter to dismiss the accusation – by sarcastically admitting that it’s true.

“Damn… busted! It’s true, I sneaked into @BupaCromHosp yesterday, gave myself a gastroscopy under sedation when nobody was looking, then diagnosed myself with fake gastritis & duodenitis, and sneaked out again,” he said.

“Kudos to your sleuths for nailing my PR stunt.. 👏👏”
