Mike Thalassitis’ friend reveals fate of his restaurant after tragic death

Mike passed away last weekend

Mike Thalassitis’ restaurant in Essex will still open following his tragic death.

The Love Island star, who was found dead last weekend after he took his own life at the age of 26, was due to open The Skillet with his business partner Scott Neilson.

And now Scott has confirmed the restaurant will still open after a “tough week” following Mike’s death.

A statement on the restaurant’s Instagram read: “Just to address all the speculation. I would like to make it clear that we will be opening The Skillet when it is ready, it has been a tough week trying to continue to sort things out.

“However, Mike would’ve wanted this cafe to open, he spent everyday for the past couple of months working hard to make this place a success so we are pulling together to get this ready for everyone and especially for Mike.

“Can’t wait to share it with you all, and I will announce the date of the opening shortly.”

On Friday, heartbroken friends of Mike held a vigil at the place where he died.

Candles were lit and lanterns were sent flying into the sky in his memory.

In the wake of his death, and that of fellow Love Island contestant Sophie Gradon, the show came under fire from former islanders, fans and even the Health Secretary Matt Hancock, who said they have a duty of care for islanders after they become famous.

Sophie, who appeared on the show in 2016, was found dead at her home in Ponteland, Northumberland, in June last year and it was believed she had taken her own life.

However, last week Sophie’s parents said they believe there is nothing to support claims that she died by suicide.

Love Island responded by making changes to its aftercare policy.

They said it had undertaken a review of its aftercare six months ago and hired Dr Paul Litchfield, an experienced physician and a Chief Medical Officer, to “review our medical processes” on the programme.

Following the review, the show has said it will offer support to all contestants rather than just those who ask for it.
