Met Office warns thunderstorms and strong winds to hit Britain this week after ‘mini-heatwave’

The weekend's sunshine has come to an end

Brits have been warned that thunderstorms and strong winds are on the way as last weekend’s glorious sunshine comes to an end.

The Met Office has said heavy rainfall will move into central and northern areas from the west on Tuesday (June 4).

There will be sunny spells and potentially heavy showers for eastern England, but, it will be a largely dry day for far northern Scotland.

South West England and parts of Wales will see thunderstorms by late afternoon today and Kent could see storms around 4pm.

Northern Ireland and Scotland will also see showers and persistent spells of rain.

Forecasters have said that these weather conditions will continue from Wednesday to Saturday.

Aidan McGivern from the Met Office told The Sun: “A blanket of thick cloud and persistent rain are starting to come down as we end Tuesday. It’s horrible conditions out there.”

The Met Office has even put a yellow rain warning in place in Northern Ireland between 2pm on Tuesday to 8am on Wednesday.

It comes after Brits enjoyed a sunny weekend, in which temperatures hit a high of 29C in Weybourne, Norfolk, on Sunday (June 2).

Parts of the UK were even hotter than tourist spots Barcelona, Rome and Saint Tropez – which topped around 26C.

Meanwhile, this week’s unsettled weather is expected to continue into the weekend, with a mixture of sunny spells and scattered showers on Saturday (June 8).

However, according to the Met Office, there is still the likelihood of some persistent rain and perhaps strong winds arriving from the southwest to affect some parts for a time, most likely on Sunday.

Next week, it’s expected to stay cool and showery, with some longer spells of rain at times.

Temperatures will generally be close to or a little below average at first, but with a chance of occasional warm spells in the east and southeast.
