Met Office issues warnings as torrential rain set to batter UK after 38C scorcher

Temperatures are expected to drop too

After Britain experienced the ‘hottest July day ever’ yesterday, it seems storms and heavy rain will be returning this weekend.

The Met Office has issued yellow rain warnings on Saturday (July 27) and Sunday (July 28) as flash flooding is likely.

Brits have been warned that homes and businesses could be flooded over the next two days.

The torrential rain could cause traffic chaos and damage to properties in north, north-east and north-west England.

The warning is in place from Saturday at 9am to 3pm on Sunday.

Heavy rainfall is expected to move erratically across the south-east and north-west of the UK this weekend.

The Met Office says there’s a slight chance of delays or cancellations to train and bus services where flooding occurs.

Spray and flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures.

There is also a small chance of fast flowing or deep floodwater causing “dangerous conditions”.

Temperatures are expected to be a lot cooler over the weekend compared to Thursday, where it reached a scorching 38.1C (100.58F) in Cambridge.

This was just the second time temperatures over 100F have been recorded in the UK.

The current hottest temperature recorded in the UK is 38.5C (101.3F), which was set in 2003.

Temperatures are expected to be around 22C on Saturday and 23C on Sunday.

Saturday will see outbreaks of heavy rain across western Scotland, northeast Wales, and England away from the southwest, but will become drier and brighter in the northeast later.

Meanwhile, on Sunday, heavy rain will continue across northern and some eastern areas.

A Met Office spokesman said: “After Thursday’s peak, temperatures are expected to return closer to normal as we head through the weekend, with the weather becoming less settled and an increased chance of rain for many eastern and north-eastern areas.”
